Los Angeles Premiere for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING To Benefit the American Film Institute
Sunday, December 16, 2001

WHAT: THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING is based upon the first novel of the best-selling trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Considered to be the greatest epic-adventure story ever told, the film chronicles the struggle between good and evil for possession of a magical ring that can shift the balance of the power of the world.

Set in the mystical world of Middle-Earth, a courageous young man named Frodo Baggins is entrusted with the gold ring -- a ring of such immense power that the dark forces of evil must not gain control of it. It is now up to Frodo and a Fellowship of eight others to carry the ring across the vast lands of Middle Earth to the center of the dark kingdom -- the only place that the Ring can be destroyed.

An epic journey ensues as the Fellowship carries out its dangerous mission -- to destroy the Ring. At every turn, the group is pursued by Sauron's evil forces who are also intent on recovering the Ring. But, the Ring has enormous powers all its own ... and wants to be found. It has the power to corrupt the wearer and brings with it more peril and risk than the Fellowship could have imagined.

Directed by Peter Jackson (HEAVENLY CREATURES and THE FRIGHTENERS).
