Tom & Thomas is sometimes too predictable

Shrek, Harry Potter, Atlantis and Minoes [note from translator: Minoes is a Dutch children's movie about a young woman, Minoes, who once was a cat, but still has her cat-abilities] tried to get complete tribes to the cinema, with this mix of magic and imagination.
Also Esme Lammers' second film Tom & Thomas contains some of those creative elements, though they are a bit more traditional. As if you've walked into an Anton Pieck [note: a famous fictional painter] like youth-comic.
London in winter - Big Ben surrounded with snowflakes and Harrods trimmed as a colourful Christmas tree - is the most perfect set for that. Add an intimidating institute for homeless kids, some icy teachers who are not afraid of physical punishment, a gang of smugglers and you have an ambiance that would have made Charles Dickens jealous.
Tom (Aaron Johnson) is the unlucky one who gets raised without love in the same institute from which the smugglers operate. He doesn't know that he's part of twins that were separated. Although he always has a feeling there's something wrong.
Same goes for his twin brother Thomas (also performed by Johnson) who is raised pretty free and open by his single and painting foster dad. Coincidence - or faith? - lead both of them to each other in what ends up in adventurous and funny events.
The climax is the chase in the landing gear and baggage space of a Transavia-Boeing getting airborne.
Esme Lammers creates a beautiful magical realistic ambiance that makes you feel the enormous bond between the two boys. Sean Bean, specialised in playing creeps, surprises pleasantly as the worrying artist, who thinks that raising his son is much more difficult than the making of a new masterpiece.
In spite of this all, Esme Lammers does not succeed in making this one more original than her first movie Long Live the Queen. The reason is, that some things in the plot, although the action is pretty good, are too predictable. And she also has bad luck that her movie premiered shortly after big ones as Harry Potter and Minoes.
Because of this the audience got pretty spoiled.
It's not easy to get noticed then.

Tom & Thomas is soms te voorspelbaar

Fantasy en avontuur regeren momenteel de jeugdfilm. Shrek, Harry
Potter, Atlantis en Minoes lokten met een mix van magie en verbeelding
complete volksstammen naar de bioscoop. Ook Esmé Lammers'
tweede speelfilm Tom & Thomas bevat dergelijke creatieve elementen,
zij het iets traditioneler van uitvoering. Alsof je in een Anton
Pieck-achtige jeugdstrip bent beland.
Het winterse Londen - Big Ben omhuld door sneeuwvlokken en Harrods
opgetuigd als een kleurige kerstboom - vormt daarvoor het perfecte
decor. Voeg daarbij een intimiderend opvoedkundig instituut voor
dakloze kinderen, enkele ijzige leraren die lijfstraffen niet
schuwen, een bende smokkelaars en je hebt een sfeer waarop Charles
Dickens jaloers zou zijn geweest.
Tom (Aaron Johnson) is de ongelukkige die liefdeloos wordt grootgebracht
in het instituut van waaruit de smokkelaars opereren. Zonder dat
hij het weet is hij de ene helft van een uit elkaar gehaalde tweeling.
Hoewel: er knaagt altijd iets bij Tom. Zo ook bij zijn wederhelft
Thomas (ook gespeeld door Johnson) die van zijn schilderende alleenstaande
pleegvader (Sean Bean) een vrije opvoeding krijgt voorgeschoteld.
Toeval - of het lot? - drijven beiden naar elkaar toe wat leidt
tot avontuurlijke en komische gebeurtenissen. Met als climax een
achtervolging in het landingsgestel en de laadruimte van een opstijgende
Transavia-Boeing.
Esmé Lammers schetst een prachtig magisch realistisch sfeerbeeld
en maakt de hechte band tussen beide jongens - soms op een zeer
humoristische manier - voelbaar. Sean Bean, gespecialiseerd in
het spelen van creeps, verrast aangenaam als tobbende kunstschilder
die het grootbrengen van zijn zoon moeilijker vindt dan het maken
van een nieuw meesterwerk. Toch slaagt Lammers er niet haar eerste
film Lang leve de Koningin qua originaliteit te overtreffen. Daarvoor
zijn sommige plotwendingen, hoewel de actie wel wat goed maakt,
te voorspelbaar. Verder heeft ze de pech haar productie te presenteren
kort na toppers als Harry Potter en Minoes. Hierdoor is het publiek
behoorlijk verwend geraakt. Het valt niet mee om dan nog op te
vallen.
