Sallie Aprahamian (Director) Sallie Aprahamian worked as a freelance theatre director after graduating from Bristol University as a mature student. She directed over 30 productions of new work, for a wide range of companies including Duke's Playhouse Lancaster, Women's Theatre Group and Perspectives. She was co-founder of the fringe company Plain Clothes Productions, developing then directing the critically-acclaimed Blue Night in the Heart of the West by James Stock, at the Bush Theatre. The play won the George Devine Award in 1992. Sallie moved into television working first as a script and story editor on Eastenders, before gaining a place on the BBC Drama Directors' Course. Her work on the course included directing the shorts Legless for Ian by Ashley Pharoah and Eat, by Jeremy Brock. As a result of this, Sallie was invited by producer Corinne Hollingsworth to direct an episode of the BBC's highly successful series Casualty, entitled "First Impressions", written by Lisa Evans. She was subsequently asked to direct the Christmas episode "Talking Turkey", written by Lilie Ferrari, and "Nightfall", written by Simon Ashdown. Sallie has directed four blocks of Eastenders for BBC Television, one of which was shot on special location. Sallie directed the first three episodes of the second series of This Life, produced by Jane Fallon, and executive produced by Tony Garnet for World Productions and BBC Television, and was then asked back to direct episodes 13, 14 and 15. The series and in particular Sallie's direction has been highly praised, and won the South Bank Show Award for Best Television Drama and the Royal Television Society's Award for Best Drama Series. She was the lead director on the BBC1 prime time series City Central, created by Tony Jordan, and directed episodes 4, 5 and 6 in the second series of The Lakes, created by Jimmy McGovern and produced by Company Pictures for BBC Television. In addition to her television direction, Sallie has worked as a tutor on the Media '95 initiative Pilots, developing long-running series for European Television, and contributed to the EBU Drama Experts Conference in Budapest. She has organised and run assorted writers' workshops for many companies and worked as a director/lecturer for Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama and the City Literary Institute. She is a visiting tutor at the National Film and Television School.
