Episode Four

The final episode of Extremely Dangerous opens with Byrne realising that the odds are stacking up against him. He still cannot manage to break Patagonia's codes. The pressure is telling on him, as he accuses Annie of using him, sending him on a wild goose chase, and even suspecting her of colluding with Ericson, whom he now knows is corrupt. They have a passionate row which only serves to bring his bereavement home to Byrne, and he breaks down. Annie comforts him and they become lovers.

Annie admits that she sent him the copy of Patagonia in prison. Knowing that Connor kept a copy of the book in his flat, she had made duplicates of the markings that Connor had made in his copy's margins. After looking at it, Fleming decided that if anyone could decipher it, Byrne could. Byrne now brilliantly manages to steal Patagonia from Gregg, (who has come to Manchester as bait for a police trap) suspecting that the code is shared between Connor and Ericson.

But Byrne needs to get the original because any error on the part of Annie could mean that his deciphering of the code is hampered. He breaks into Connor's flat and swops his copy with the original. Before he can escape, Connor returns and they fight. Connor phones Ericson and checks he has his half of the book, proving finally that they are in collusion with one another.

Ali-Khan radios Byrne and warns him that the police and the mob are getting close. He gives him his car and tells him to escape. He knows exactly who Byrne is, tells him he believes he is innocent. But Ali-Khan then gets captured by the mob and taken to a warehouse to be tortured about Byrne's whereabouts. Byrne manages to rescue Ali-Khan after a fight in which he kills Elgin, Connor's leg man.

Byrne matches the codes he has stolen from Connor, and begins to close down the mob's off-shore bank accounts. When Connor discovers that he cannot access any money, and realises his copy of Patagonia is not the original, he links it to Fleming. Without compunction he goes to the nursing home and kills his old boss by inducing a heart attack. Now Connor is getting desperate; he threatens Annie, at her father's funeral, so that she will lead him to Byrne.

Byrne is lured to Connor and is chained and thrown into a swimming pool. Before he allows Byrne to drown however, he tells him the long awaited, awful truth.

Ericson had sold out to the mob and it was his idea to have Byrne's family murdered, thus discrediting any claims he might make about the syndicate. Connor and Elgin actually carried out the murders.

Connor confirms that he and Ericson controlled missing millions through the Patagonia books. He explains that the minute traces found on Byrne of his daughter's blood which led to his prosecution were placed by him on Byrne when he ruffled his hair. Just as he's about to kill Byrne he is shot dead by Annie.

The police burst in and arrest Annie, rescue Byrne and round up the rest of the syndicate. Byrne and Wallace proceed separately to Manchester Airport where Ericson is about to make his escape. Byrne confronts him with a gun and is sorely tempted to kill him, in spite of the threat of a further prison term. But then Ericson is terminated by his own people from MI5.

Wallace tells Byrne he is to be charged with Elgin's manslaughter and reads him his rights. It is clear that he feels uncomfortable doing so and he turns a blind eye to let Byrne, desperate to visit his family's graves and sort things out, walk away.
