Esmé Lammers is filming winter in summery park of Haarlem

A film set has descended, for 'Tom & Thomas' from Esmé
Lammers.
On the white half, people are walking in warm winter coats, wearing
thick mittens and scarfs. There is even an enormous snowman and
someone is walking, carrying a Christmas tree over his shoulder.
But a little further in the succulent grass, bronzed bodies are
basking themselves, wearing thin shirts in a blazing sun. Something
is wrong here, that's obvious. Then a voice with an unmistakable
British accent is bellowing: "Okay, stand-by please, here
we go and action!"
A real film set has descended in the Kenaupark. That brings a
lot of activity along. Technicians are walking to and fro, and
scattered over the set, people are constantly conferring with
each other. In the shadow of a garden tent, director Esmé
Lammers is staring at her monitor. Every now and then she gives
an instruction. The internationally cast, English speaking movie
she is making is called "Tom & Thomas". It is her
second, after the several times awarded 'Long live the Queen'
of 1995.
The film's story is about the nine year old twin brothers Tom
and Thomas, who grow up seperately without knowing of each others'
existence. Tom has an imaginary friend he calls Thomas, and Thomas
an imaginary friend called Tom. When, just before Christmas, they
actually meet each other in the mirror maze of the Science Museum,
they want to stay together forever. But before that wish comes
true, they go through a lot of adventures. So will they have to
fight against a gang of child-smugglers.
"It is wonderful to be on the set again after all this time,"
says Lammers. "The experiences gained with my first movie
have sunk in by now. Back then I was constantly concerned with
the question if I could do it all. Now I have much more overview
and I can concentrate much better on the movie itself. Also, working
with Aaron Johnson, the English boy who plays the roles of both
Tom and Thomas, is very pleasant. The girl in ' Long live the
Queen ' was really still a child back then. With her, I really
had to have it from the stolen moments. But Aaron is, at eleven
years, already a real actor. He also already has a lot of experience."
The film is set in London, where most scenes already have been
shot. To keep down production expenses, some scenes are being
shot in The Netherlands and Belgium. In the Haarlem scenes, the
father of Thomas - played by Sean Bean - is taking his son to
school in an old Volkswagen van. When he is collecting him again,
he doesn't notice that Tom took Thomas' place.
The windows of the stately office villas on the edge of the park
are covered with childrens' drawings. Above one of the doors there
is a big sign, saying: 'Hillside Preparatory School' . There is
a big red double decker and the cars that have to drive through
the picture are being equipped with English licence plates. When
the Volkswagen van won't start after a few takes, filming is at
a standstill for a moment. A little later it's being pushed by
a few crewmembers and soon after it is sounding aloud again over
the Kenaupark: "....and action!"

Winter in het Kenaupark
Voor de filmopnamen werd er driftig nepsneeuw op de grasmat gespoten en sjouwden hulpjes rond met een piepschuimen sneeuwpop.

Eind mei, en toch ziet het Haarlemse Kenaupark wit van de sneeuw.
Correctie: de hélft van het Kenaupark. Op de witte helft
lopen mensen in warme winterjassen, met dikke wanten aan en sjalen
om. Er staat zelfs een enorme sneeuwpop en iemand komt aangelopen
met een kerstboom over zijn schouder. Maar even verderop in het
sappige gras koesteren bruingebrande lijven zich in luchtige shirtjes
aan de felschijnende zon. Hier klopt iets niet, dat is wel duidelijk.
Dan galmt een stem met een onmiskenbaar Brits accent: ’Okay,
stand-by please... here we go... and action!’
Er is zaterdag een heuse filmset neergestreken in het Kenaupark. Dat brengt een hoop bedrijvigheid met zich mee. Technici lopen af en aan, verspreid over de set zijn mensen doorlopend met elkaar in overleg. In de schaduw van een tuintent zit regisseuse Esmé Lammers naar haar monitor te staren. Af en toe geeft ze een aanwijzing. De internationaal opgezette, Engels gesproken film die ze aan het maken is, heet Tom & Thomas. Het is haar tweede, na het meervoudig bekroonde Lang Leve de Koningin uit 1995.
De rolprent vertelt het verhaal van de negenjarige tweelingbroers Tom en Thomas, die gescheiden opgroeien, zonder te weten van elkaars bestaan. Tom heeft een denkbeeldig vriendje dat hij Thomas noemt, Thomas een denkbeeldig vriendje dat Tom heet. Wanneer ze elkaar vlak voor kerst daadwerkelijk ontmoeten in het spiegeldoolhof van het wetenschapsmuseum, willen ze voor altijd samen blijven. Maar voor die wens waarheid wordt, beleven ze nog heel wat avonturen. Zo moeten ze de strijd aangaan tegen een bende kindersmokkeleaars.
,,Het is heerlijk om na al die tijd weer op de set te staan," zegt Lammers. ,,De ervaringen opgedaan bij mijn eerste film zijn inmiddels goed bezonken. Toen was ik doorlopend bezig met de vraag of ik het wel kon allemaal. Nu heb ik veel meer overzicht en kan ik me stukken beter op de film zélf concentreren. Ook het werken met Aaron Johnson, het Engelse jongetje dat de rollen van zowel Tom als Thomas speelt, is erg prettig. Het meisje in Lang Leve de Koningin was toen echt nog een kind. Ik moest het met haar toch veel hebben van gestolen momenten. Maar Aaron is met zijn elf jaar al een echte acteur. Hij heeft ook al heel veel ervaring.’’
De film speelt zich af in Londen, waar de meeste opnamen al zijn gemaakt. Om de productiekosten te drukken, worden sommige scènes in Nederland en België gedraaid. In de Haarlemse scènes brengt de vader van Thomas - gespeeld door Sean Bean - zijn zoontje in een oud Volkswagenbusje naar school. Wanneer hij hem weer ophaalt, merkt hij niet dat Tom de plaats van Thomas heeft ingenomen.
De ramen van de statige kantoorvilla’s langs de rand van het park zijn volgehangen met kindertekeningen. Boven één van de deuren hangt een groot bord ’Hillside preparatory school’. Er is een grote rode dubbeldekker en de auto’s die door het beeld moeten rijden worden voorzien van Engelse kentekenplaten. Wanneer het Volkswagenbusje na een aantal takes niet meer start, liggen de opnamen even stil. Even later wordt het door een aantal crewleden aangeduwd en klinkt het al snel weer luid over het Kenaupark: ’...and action!’
