Telepathic doubles.

Probably to avoid the bustle around big brother Harry Potter and self-willed sister Minoes, the English language production Tom & Thomas, by Dutch Esmé Lammers, comes to the cinemas shortly before spring break.
Still it is Christmas in a lot of ways in this family film.
Not only because the story starts with a London, buried in snow and Christmas trees, but also because the lead characters are foundlings, and there is something utterly Christmassy about the classic theme of a look-alike. Being alone in the world is ghastly, and that’s why a fantasy about a soul-mate, who wanders around somewhere else, but has the same dreams and thoughts, is such a snug fantasy. Stories that feed fantasy are success stories beforehand - just think of a classic like ‘The Prince and the Pauper’.
In Tom & Thomas Esmé Lammers gives the theme a new turn by connecting the two by telepathy and, for a change, not making one rich and the other poor. Still Thomas is better of with his foster father than Tom is in a Dickensian children’s home. It gets adventurous when they secretively tackle the illegal practices of the home together.
Six years ago Esmé Lammers startled the audience with ‘Long Live the Queen’ and as original and imaginative as that one, this film isn’t. The way the Dutch dubbing plods along isn’t very helpful either, with the voice of Monique van der Ven from the mouth of British Geraldine James and a broad The Hague dialect by London Tom.
But still it is a nice fantasy, the double’s fantasy.
As a just skilfully made reading on that, Tom & Thomas, especially in its original version, is a pleasant and entertaining boy’s adventure.

Dubbelgangers met telepathie

Vast om de drukte rond grote broer 'Harry Potter' en eigenzinnige
zus 'Minoes' uit de weg te gaan, verschijnt de Engelstalige productie
'Tom en Thomas' van de Nederlandse Esmé Lammers nu iets
voor de krokusvakantie in de Nederlandse bioscopen. Toch is het
op allerlei manieren kerstmis in deze familiefilm.
Niet alleen omdat het verhaal begint in een met sneeuw en kerstbomen
bedolven Londen, maar ook omdat de hoofdpersonen vondelingen zijn
en er aan het klassieke thema van de ontmoeting met de dubbelganger
iets oer-kerstmisserigs kleeft. Alleen op de wereld zijn is akelig,
en daarom is de fantasie over de zielsverwant die elders ronddwaalt
maar die dezelfde dromen en gedachtes heeft, ook zo'n knusse fantasie.
Verhalen die die fantasie voeden zijn bij voorbaat succesvolle
verhalen, denk aan een klassieker als 'The Prince and the Pauper'.
In 'Tom en Thomas' geeft Lammers een nieuwe draai aan het thema
door de twee telepatisch aan elkaar te verbinden en deze keer
eens niet de één rijk en de ander arm te maken.
Wel is Thomas er bij zijn adoptiefvader beter aan toe dan Tom
in het dickensiaanse kindertehuis. Avontuurlijk wordt het als
ze stiekem samen de illegale praktijken in dat tehuis te lijf
gaan.
Lammers baarde zes jaar geleden opzien met 'Lang leve de koningin'
en zo origineel en fantasievol als die film is deze niet. Daarbij
is de film bijna alleen maar te zien in de moeizame Nederlandstalige
nasynchronisatie met de stem van Monique van de Ven uit de mond
van de Britse Geraldine James en een plat Haags accent bij de
Londense Tom. Maar het blijft een lekkere fantasie, de dubbelgangersfantasie.
Als niet meer dan een vakkundig gemaakte variant daarop is 'Tom
en Thomas', zeker in de originele versie, toch ook een aardig
en onderhoudend jongensavontuur.
